Frequently Asked Questions

MB HomeCare works with multiple insurance providers and you may be eligible for care reimbursement through your long term care policy. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about using insurance for care.

Is MB HomeCare an approved provider?

Yes! MB HomeCare is a licensed Residential Service Agency.

Who initiates the claim?

The policy holder or Power of Attorney will need to initiate the claim. There will be an 800 number on the insurance policy paperwork that you will call to start a new claim. MB HomeCare does not have the legal authority to pull the necessary records to initiate a new claim.

After the claim is opened, what do I do?

The insurance company will send you a packet to fill out. Generally, there is also paperwork for the attending physician, MB HomeCare, and the MB HomeCare nursing staff. All the papers will need to go to the appropriate people, be filled out and returned to the insurance company.

What is an elimination period?

Many policies have an elimination period. This is the time between the approved claim start date and when reimbursement begins. It often takes longer to have the claim approved than the elimination period.
For example, if you initiate a claim on June 1st and have a 30 day elimination period, even if the claim is not approved until July 20th, the claim start date is still June 1st provided the RN assessment was done on or before June 1st.

Does the insurance company reimburse me, or do they pay MB HomeCare directly?

This is up to your family. Most families prefer MB HomeCare invoice and receive payments directly from the insurer. If you would like to take advantage of this option, you will need to sign an “Assignment of Benefits.” Some insurance companies provide this paper in the initial packet, and some will provide it only if it is requested by the insured or insured’s POA. Please note that unless and until this is complete, all reimbursements will go directly to the insured, and it is up to the insured to remit payment to MB HomeCare when invoices are due.

What information does MB HomeCare need from me at the beginning of a claim?

MB HomeCare must have the insured’s birthdate, address, last four digits of the social security number, and the claim identification number. We cannot speak to the insurance company about the claim without this information.

How much does my insurance cover?

Every policy is different. The insurer will only discuss coverage limits with the insured or the insured’s POA. MB HomeCare can submit all care time to the insurance company, but daily limits of reimbursement are individual to your policy, and unknown to MB HomeCare

When does coverage start?

For care to start being eligible for reimbursement, a MB HomeCare Registered Nurse will need to come perform a nursing assessment. This is required by the insurance companies, as well as MB HomeCare.
RN visits are not generally eligible for reimbursement. MB HomeCare cannot provide the insurer with any care notes for reimbursement prior to the RN assessment.

The insured lives in a facility and already receives benefits. Do they carry over?

No. Depending on the policy, the insured may be eligible for both facility care and in-home care. However, this will require an additional set of paperwork specific to MB HomeCare. Most companies also provide an additional claim identification number specific to home care only.

My insurer is requesting care notes and invoices, where do I get those?

MB HomeCare will provide invoices and daily care notes directly to the insurance company every two to four weeks.
